East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council

“Throughout the long history of our species, humans have moved other organisms. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident. It's part of what we do. Once in a while, a species we've moved has found itself in virgin territory and has spread rapidly, changing the landscape for ever. Plants that seem to suddenly "take over" are labeled "invasive," meaning that they have characteristics in their abilities to disperse and spread that let them do damage to otherwise intact ecological systems. This is a serious problem, both in conservation terms and in economic terms.”  Canadian Botanical Conservation Network

Contact our Coordinator and book a date for EKIPC to come into your school, attend a meeting or go on for a walk and we’ll help you determine what you can do about invasive species in the East Kootenays

The past year has been a very busy one for EKIPC.  They and their contractors worked hard to control invasive plants in the East Kootenays.  We held several meetings with various community and stakeholder groups and celebrate our second anniversary this summer.  We have accomplished several new inventories and increased our knowledge of invasive plants.  Our AGM and conference were well attended and we presented our 2010 Annual Report and appendices A, B and C.  The EKIPC team has improved its Annual Operating Plan as well and would like to introduce its Early Detection Rapid Response Plan.
